Cascata da Pombeira

Description

The waterfall of Pombeira is a series of waterfalls on the granite massif of Montemuro. These appeared in the Pleistocene period, about 2 million years ago, through an orthogonal fracturing system in the granite, which, being weakened, allowed the river Pombeiro so sculpt the landscape. Here we can observe impressive landforms created by this erosion, as the giant kettles. Mingling in this landscape we can also find some mills, testimony of centuries of human activity on this site. These granite outcrops are also important refuge of biodiversity, highlighting the presence of endemic plants, such as rocky germander and the rocky daisy.
