The Douro is the largest river in the Iberian Peninsula and the valley formed by its passage provides stunning landscapes of obligatory visit (D6 – Monte de São Domingos and D8 – Monte de São Gens). The Areal do Espadanedo (D13) testifies the time when this river flowed freely, now it’s ingeniously dammed, forming a soft water lake embedded in a valley of undeniable beauty (D3 – Foz do Arda, D11 – Ilha dos Amores, D12 – Cais do Escamarão). There is more to this line with lots of carboniferous aged fossils – Fósseis do Carbonífero (D2) with ferns engraved in the rock and memories of human history inscribed on the granite stone (D9 – Marmoiral da Boavista).
