The hill of São Gens, with an altitude of 328 meters, is one of the highest points of Castelo de Paiva municipality, being a privileged view point to contemplate part of this county. Stands out in the landscape the Sardoura stream valley, and the imposing river Douro crossing the numerous reliefs that make up the landscape. Although they are no longer visible, here were found traces of a fortified settlement from the Iron Age, ie the period between 1000 and 2000 B.C., these settlements were common in these reliefs. São Gens hill, because of its altitude and views over the surrounding land was probably used as a place of defense and agricultural control.
