Here, next to the chapel of Santa Bárbara, protector against lightning and storms, you can have a view over the valley of Varosa river, the Douro river tributary. From here we can see, the region source of the Varosa river, near the village of Almofala, dominated by schist rocks and then through the granitic rocks of the massive of Montemuro, being visible a drastic river’s change of direction to the north. This is a good example of existing rivers’ adaptation to the fracturing granitic lithology. This fantastic valley can be explored through the PR 6 – Trilho do Varosa (Varosa trail) where an immense biodiversity can be seen, with the presence of species such as the marsh fritillary, the heath spotted-orchid or the royal fern along Varosa’s valley.
