EXPLORE SERRA DA ARADA

At over 1071 meters high

The Arada mountain is located at the eastern end of the Gralheira massif, reaching 1071 meters at its summit. The Arada has valleys ripped in schist and granite, reminiscences of exotic destinations of lost continents. Its mineral wealth has been used in the recent past (World War II), as we may witness at the Rio de Frades (A7) and Regoufe (A9) tungsten mines, with galleries that turned the hard stone into an authentic Swiss cheese. Rivers and streams of clear water abound here, especially the Paivô river and the Landeira stream, originating one of the most naturally dense pools network in Portugal and, therefore, constituing a mandatory stop at RAP®: Poços da Ponte Teixeira (A1), Poço Azul (A2), Poços do Paivô (A8) and Lagoas de Drave (A10). Finally, the quartzite crests arranged as giant bookstores and the fossil tracks of trilobites aged 480 million years are visitable at the Livraria da Pena – Bookstore of Pena – (A12), São Macário (A13) and Deilão (A14).
